Overview:Imperialism is autocratic, and sometimes monolithic in character. The term imperialism refers to a political or geographical domain such as the russian or brittish empire. This term can also be applied to domains of knowledge, beliefs, values and expertise, such as christianity or islam. The Boxer Rebellion: At the beginning of the 20th century Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and Germany controled parts of china. later on the British had forced themselfs onto the chinese with back up not far behind them. Russia had buit railways across manchuria and had taken possessin of the port called arthur by leasing the peninsula. The foreigners were using the chinese treaty ports as naval stations, and they also forced china to open trade with them to admit foreign enterprises which included railways and mining companies. China also obliged to accept special privleges for chinese that have converted to Christianity.
The chinese people were upset with their country's humiliation since they were defeted by the japanese in 1894 in a war over influence in Korea. They called the japanses dwarf pirates, because they thought that foreigners as inferior barbarians. Many groups in China encouraged by the empress were displaying slogans such as " protect the country," "justice on behalf of heaven," and "destroy the foreigner." They wore red belts and a red cloth on their heads and were known as the boxers. They thought that the goverment had declared war on the foreginers and started attacking and killing many Christian missionaries and Chinese converts to Christianity. They thought that chinese converts where likely spys, collaborators and triators, and saw them as a danger in a time of war.
The boxers burned three villages within a hundred miles of Beijing that killed sixty Chinese Christians. Many Christians took refuge form the boxers in the treaty ports in Beijing. Many countries formed together to make a force 2,000 strong to go to beijing and defeat the boxers, they fought the boxers for 2 weeks. Before their rampage was over the killed about 250 missionaries, 50 of their children, and 32,000 Chinese converts to Christianity. Works cited:
